Organizing for Slobs Lesson 1- Happy Slob's Housecleaning

Organizing - Lesson #1 - Know Where the Stuff IS

Okay, take a big, cleansing breath. We ARE talking about organizing. I'm NOT naturally inclined to be an organized person at ALL! But, I know that I CAN be. :) And so can you, in spite of our happy slob mentality.

Lesson One, therefore, will gently take us into this scary realm of organizing. Oops, no, I take that back - it actually needn't be all that scary. When I was sitting down and trying to figure out where to start, I realized that all the organizing in the world won't help us if we don't have a sweet clue where any of our nicely organized stuff IS!

So - get a binder, notebook, whatever you like - and make an Organized Journal. Because all of our good efforts won't really help in the least if we have everything nicely sorted and boxed away in cute coordinating containers...and yet we don't know what they contain! That would, in fact, be rather maddening.

Before starting any organizing, get some sort of notepad or binder to keep track of where things are. For instance, I plan on re-organizing my freelance writing stuff - everything from tax stuff and receipts to old articles. I'm going to put an entry like this in my notebook:

- Writing -
- receipts (box 2 in 2nd bedroom closet)
- research materials (box 4 in 2nd bedroom closet)
- copies of my best selling cleaning book, published by a major publisher and chosen by Oprah due to its practicality AND personality (Oh right, that's stored in my dream world.)

You get the idea! Then, when you need to find something again, you'll be able to know exactly where it is. So this is LESSON 1 in our absolutely UN-SCARY mission to become more organized. Bravo to you all! We've bravely stepped into a realm previously unknown to happy slobs everywhere...
