Space Surveys: Finding Storage in Even the Smallest Spaces

By Christina Spence

The bane of every condo and apartment dweller? Well, besides not having a sprawling garden area in which to host afternoon teas (I can DREAM, can't I?)... Right, it's the lack of suitable storage space.

In my 2 bedroom apartment, I'm quite sure the original architects owned one pair of pants and splurged on two different shirts - because that's about the capacity of the closets. So, what do I do? What can YOU do if you're an apartment dweller and face a similar fate? (This applies to you homeowners too - inadequate storage is not a plight of the apartment dweller alone!)

First things first - you conduct a space survey. Before you head to the library for a Nasa-inspired tome, let's decipher what I mean here. No, you're not going to drag out your 8th grade telescope to survey the skies, although once you're done your latest cleaning burst you may well choose to reward yourself in that way. A SPACE SURVEY simply means that you're going to find space you didn't even know you had.

You'll need:
* A notebook & pen
* A fresh perspective on your space

Take your notebook and start right from the front door. Besides the logical storage areas, find new spaces that you never thought to use for storage. Under the beds is a FABULOUS place for flat boxes that house out-of-season clothes. How about under or behind the sofa? Can you add a quirky shelf high up on the living room walls, for extra storage for CDs and books?

Remember - find spaces BEHIND, UNDER and OVER things. Look at all of the areas of your home with a fresh perspective. You'll be shocked at how much space you have that you've never bothered to use! Make notes, jot down ideas, and visit groovy decorating spots like Ikea (which I happen to LOOOOVE) for amazing ideas on ways to utilize these new storage spaces that just seemed to pop out of nowhere!
